Ep018 – How to Start Your Video with Confidence and Clarity | The VidConcierge Show with Dr. Walter Salubro

Episode Overview

You can spend your entire day confidently answering patient questions, explaining conditions, and helping people understand their problems. Then you turn on a camera, and suddenly communicating feels much more difficult.

Why?

For many healthcare professionals, the problem isn’t a lack of confidence. It’s a shift in attention.

Instead of focusing on helping someone understand, you start evaluating yourself. You think about how you look, how you sound, whether you’re saying the right thing, and whether you appear confident enough.

In Episode 018 of The VidConcierge Show, Dr. Walter Salubro explains why confidence often follows clarity and shares three techniques that can help healthcare professionals bring the same natural confidence they have with patients to their videos.

The goal isn’t to become a different person on camera. It’s to let the experienced healthcare professional your patients already know and trust show up on video.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • Why confidence is often the result of clarity rather than something you need to create before recording
  • How focusing on an “audience” can make recording feel more intimidating
  • How the Patient Mindset shifts your attention from performing to helping one person
  • Why warming up before pressing Record can make your delivery more natural
  • How to “build a runway” before recording so you can move from recording mode into communication mode
  • How to use your years of clinical experience as a source of genuine confidence
  • Why remembering how you already explain topics to patients can improve your on-camera delivery

Confidence Follows Clarity

Many people assume they need to feel confident before they can communicate confidently on camera.

But think about how you communicate with patients in your practice.

When explaining a condition you’ve treated hundreds of times, you probably don’t stop and ask yourself whether you sound confident. Your experience gives you clarity, and that clarity allows you to focus on helping the patient.

That’s what genuine confidence looks like.

You don’t need to act fearless or become a polished professional speaker. You need to know what you want the person watching to understand and focus your attention on helping them understand it.

You’re already the expert.

The camera doesn’t change the years you’ve spent learning your profession, treating patients, answering questions, and developing ways to explain complex ideas.

Technique 1: Use the Patient Mindset

One of the easiest ways to make recording feel intimidating is to imagine yourself speaking to a large audience.

Instead, think about one person.

Picture a patient you’ve recently helped with the exact problem you’re discussing in your video. Remember their questions, concerns, and what they needed to understand.

Then imagine that patient sitting just behind the camera.

Now, instead of asking yourself, “Do I sound professional enough?” ask:

“How can I explain this so this person really understands it?”

That shift changes the purpose of the recording.

You’re no longer trying to create confidence. You’re creating clarity for another person.

And when your attention moves away from yourself and back toward helping someone, confidence often follows naturally.

Technique 2: Build a Warm-Up Runway

It’s unrealistic to expect yourself to sit down, press Record, and immediately deliver your best take.

Athletes warm up. Musicians rehearse. Experienced speakers give themselves time to settle into a presentation.

Recording a video shouldn’t be any different.

Before recording the version you intend to publish, spend a minute talking through your topic without worrying about mistakes.

Explain the subject out loud. Remind yourself why it matters. Let your voice settle into its natural rhythm.

This creates what Dr. Walter Salubro calls a “runway.”

By the time the real recording starts, your attention has begun moving away from the mechanics of being recorded and toward what you naturally do best: teaching.

Technique 3: Bank on Your Experience

Experienced healthcare professionals sometimes underestimate how much knowledge they’ve accumulated.

Every patient you’ve treated has added to your understanding.

Every question you’ve answered has helped you become better at explaining complicated topics.

Every challenging case has taught you something.

You don’t have to invent confidence every time you press Record. You’ve already earned it through experience.

Instead of asking, “How can I sound more confident?” ask yourself:

“How have I successfully explained this to patients before?”

Then build your video around that explanation.

Your patients have already helped you discover what works. Trust that experience.

The camera doesn’t need a different version of you. It needs the version your patients already trust.

Today’s Action Steps

Before recording your next video, use the final minute before you press Record differently.

Instead of adjusting the camera again or worrying about how you look:

  1. Think about one patient you’ve helped with the problem you’re about to discuss.
  2. Picture that person sitting just behind the camera lens.
  3. Take a slow breath.
  4. Start explaining the topic exactly as you would in your office.
  5. When you finish, watch the recording and ask yourself: “Did I sound like the doctor my patients already know and trust?”

That’s the goal.

You don’t need to perform. You don’t need to manufacture confidence. You need to remove the distractions that prevent your real expertise from coming through.
